be a witness

Nicholas Kristof published another important column today on the genocide in Darfur and the American President, Media and people's inability to care. His thesis:
It's not that he [President Bush] favors children being tossed onto bonfires or teenage girls being gang-raped and mutilated, but he can't bother himself to try very hard to stop these horrors, either.

Although I wholeheartedly agree that the genocide in Darfur requires immediate and sustained attention from all of us, the column you link to is kind of self-contradictory. The line you highlight as his "thesis" is misleading. The author also describes President Bush's efforts as being "ahead of other world leaders" and decries the stifling effect that the UN had on his call for action. More than the President, I'm inclined to blame the UN for delaying action or perverting rescue efforts. It was, after all, the UN peacekeepers in refugee camps who perpetuated the cycle of violence by raping refugees. It is the UN and not the president who is being disingenuous here.

actually, he describes President Bush as "eviscerating" a UN statement that would have made responding to genocide an obligation, joining "Cuba, Zimbabwe, Iran, Syria and Venezuela" in an "Axis of Medievil." He never "decried the stifling effect that the UN had on his call for action." You should try reading the column again...
