two debates and an open thread

So, there are two discussions going on here at Cambridge Common these last three days. Join them!

First, Deb and I have our theories on why black men have been the First Senior Class Marshal for the last three years. I'd love to hear more thoughts on this...

Second, a mini-debate over women and family has erupted after I made fun of a Crimson column about Harvard women taking more tradition family/career paths. Is the writer superficial, wrong, anti-feminist, none of the above or all of the above (my vote)?

Finally, if anyone else has something they want to throw out as a topic of discussion that isn't being covered, the comments button is all yours.

i would agree that the model stereotypical black male is seen as charismatic and confident-- qualities important in elections for positions like class marshal.

but- i'm not sure i would agree that such popularity confers "power." while most of society is ready to admire blacks for their ability to be "hip" and "cool," it seems to me that blacks continue to discrimination in gaining legitimacy in more intellectual arenas. (i am, btw, not agreeing/disagreeing with these stereotype but am acknowledging them as my own observations...)

for example, another (and arguably more important) question is when was the last time that a black student was UC president? should we question why ethnic groups are succeeding against statistical odds in say class marshal elections OR should we be questioning why they havent in other areas? or, should be looking at both-- and thus begin to tackle any discrepancies...
